Aug 17, Mequon Nature Preserve at 8:00am
Mequon Nature Preserve
8200 W County Line Rd, Mequon
Meet on the west side of the main parking lot. While the warblers are great in the spring, late summer is excellent bridging here. The grassy fields can have Henslow’s Sparrows, Dickcissels, and Eastern Meadowlarks. Ponds and muddy, marshy areas are visited by herons, ducks, soras, snipes and other shorebirds as well. The ponds along the northern edge of the Preserve on Donges Bay Rd can be particularly good for shorebirds spring through fall. Wooded areas have woodpeckers and songbirds. Raptors possible here include Kestrels, Harriers, Peregrines, and Red-tails.

Last Week:
From Katie: Paul, Jenny and Dennis came out to Bender Park Sunday morning after that huge rain storm. 10.5 inches measured in St. Francis. We were treated to 14 Willets oh boy. Being observant birders we discovered several that were missing a leg. They would hop about on the beach, only to discover everyone had 2 legs much to our relief. I wonder why they hop on one leg at times….. We had a Spotted Sandpiper and 40 Ring Billed Gulls.
From there we headed up to Lake Vista Park and walked the trails and fields. We had 23 species there, we found everything from Turkey Vultures to Purple Martins.
Paul then showed us a wooded trail where he had seen warblers in the spring. Along there we saw Cedar Waxwings trying to stand on the tops of goldenrod, they bounced up and down.
It was a fun morning! Hope to see you Sunday at Mequon Nature Preserve.

Milwaukee parks that need birding this week
The county needs eBird records throughout the year for every park and natural area. Every week there are priority parks needing eBird lists. A park could be a priority because no surveys have been done for that week. Alternatively, it could be prioritized because there are surveys, but MKE Parks suspect more species might reside there than previously identified.
We can help MKE Parks! Pick a priority park, go bird, eBird it and note time spent there.
- For August 8-14
- Baran Park
- Bender – Fitzsimmons Rd
- Caesar Park
- Dretzka Park
- Johnstone Park
- Little Menomonee River Pkwy 2, 5
- Maitland Park
- Menomonee River Pkwy 2, 3 (2 is Good Hope to Appleton, 3 is Appleton to Silver Spring)
- Milwaukee River Pkwy 2,3
- Oak Creek Parkway 5,7,14
- Pulaski Park (Milwaukee)
- Wyrick Park
Based on the needs spreadsheet MKE Parks create, Wisconsin Metro Audubon Society (Thanks Colleen!) curates suggested locations based on accessibility to the property and availability on the ebird hotspots tool. Please track your time spent! At the end of the year WMAS provides hours to the county.
Follow Wisconsin Metro Audubon on Facebook for their weekly park posts.
Note- even if it’s already been birded this week, going another day or even a different time of day helps. The parks department wants a number of surveys for each park. Birding more than once in a week is very helpful!
