eBird site: Coal Dock https://ebird.org/hotspot/L3235256
Pt Washington Bird Sanctuary https://ebird.org/hotspot/L2059749
Trails: In winter the sidewalks are icy and some may want to trudge through the snow for better looks. Wear appropriate footwear. Wide dirt paths around the Avian Sanctuary. Sidewalks, boardwalks, and grass in Coal Dock. Most areas are accessible through here. There is a small viewing platform accessible by a boardwalk for looking over the lake.
Restrooms: None. Nearest public restroom is at the marina. Downtown has a number of bakeries and coffee shops.

Milwaukee parks that need birding this week

The county needs eBird records throughout the year for every park and natural area. Every week there are priority parks needing eBird lists. A park could be a priority because no surveys have been done for that week. Alternatively, it could be prioritized because there are surveys, but MKE Parks suspect more species might reside there than previously identified.

We can help MKE Parks! Pick a priority park, go bird, eBird it and note time spent there.

For December 1-7

  • Little Menomonee River Pkwy 2- note that there is no trail and access is difficult. We have gotten in from small cul de sac on Heather Ave
  • Pulaski (Cudahy)

Note- even if it’s already been birded this week, going another day or even a different time of day helps. The parks department wants a number of surveys for each park. Birding more than once in a week is very helpful!

Wisconsin Metro Audubon is also birding for Waukesha Parks…

Bird where you can and share your ebird list with their ebird account: WaukeshaCountyBirding

NOVEMBER bird surveys needed at these locations- all are ebird hotspots

  • Berg Property – free – address S102W33451 CTH LO should get you there or very close. Small parking area, partial asphal trail and then a mix of grass and dirt. You may want to do a little off-trail to get to the river.
  • Fox Brook Park (pass or day fee)
  • Menomonee Park (pass or daily fee) – may be able to access from small city park across Lannon Rd, if we try it we will update. Watch for northern shrike
  • Mukwonago Park (pass or daily fee)- nice trails and big park
  • Muskego Park (pass or daily fee) – nice trails
