This Saturday is the first Birdathon at Havenwoods, we are going to see how many birds and species we can find that morning. Bring water and snacks, we may be walking longer than usual. Stay for a group picnic lunch. Bring your own sandwich and drink, and something to share if you can (like a bag of chips, fruit, cookies, etc)
State park sticker NOT needed, though you can buy one there. Meet in front of the building (Restrooms available). Binoculars are available to borrow. Flat trails go along gravel, wood, grass and mulched paths. Walk wind through grassland, woods, along shrubby borders and by a pond. 500 N Harbor Drive

Meet at the south end (red arrow on pic), parking along highlighted area. One of Wisconsin’s newest state parks, Lakeshore sits on the edge of downtown. The lagoon by Summerfest grounds often has a number of ducks. The short grass prairies host many sparrow species. The shrubs and trees have lots of birdy visitors. In the summer, there are nesting Purple Martins, Eastern Bluebirds, and Tree Swallows in the boxes. A great place to bird in any season

Friends of Havenwoods Birdathon. Join us on Saturday, June 13 for a Natural Resources Foundation of Wisconsin Birdathon. We will find as many species as we can at Havenwoods State Forest between 8:00 am and Noon.

Last Week

The Bog! We started at 6:30am and it was worth it! Kira and Alex led us on hikes into the bog and the upland woods. We were lucky to be there on a day with enough of a breeze to keep the bugs away. Birds were excellent with Flycatcher Bingo: Acadian (in the woods), Willow and Alder in the bog, Peewee and Great Crested both places. A real treat was seeing Ruby-throated Hummingbirds on their nests and seeing Brown Creepers coming and going from their nest tucked into some raised bark. We also were looking down and finding Wood Frogs in the woods and carnivorous plants in the bog area. For more on those plants, check out this past issue of The Bog Haunter. Drawn to Birds at Milwaukee Art Museum
Saturday, June 20, 9-11 AM
Chuck Stebelton, renowned poet, birder and Wisconsin Master Naturalist volunteer, and Naomi Cobb, Master Naturalist and a Milwaukee Art Museum docent, invite you to participate in a pilot tour at MAM: Drawn to Birds. Chuck will begin with leading a lakefront birding session outside the museum and then as the wings of the museum open, Naomi will lead a tour of artwork inspired by our avian friends. Bring your binoculars if you have them; no previous birding experience required.
Fee: $10 cash – this will allow you to explore the museum on your own afterwards as well.

Milwaukee parks that need birding this week

The county needs eBird records throughout the year for every park and natural area. Every week there are priority parks needing eBird lists. A park could be a priority because no surveys have been done for that week. Alternatively, it could be prioritized because there are surveys, but MKE Parks suspect more species might reside there than previously identified.

We can help MKE Parks! Pick a priority park, go bird, eBird it and note time spent there.

MILWAUKEE COUNTY PARKS : June 8-14

• For Parkways, the number corresponds to the eBird hotspot. Hotspots usually go from
• major road to major road although there are a few exceptions.
• Armour Park
• Barnard Park
• Chippewa Park
• Riverton Meadows

Based on the needs spreadsheet from MKE Parks, Wisconsin Metro Audubon Society (Thanks Colleen!) curates suggested locations based on accessibility to the property and availability on the ebird hotspots tool. Please track your time spent! At the end of the year WMAS provides hours to the county.

Note- even if it’s already been birded this week, going another day or even a different time of day helps. The parks department wants a number of surveys for each park. Birding more than once in a week is very helpful!
